Two Words That Create A Bigger Future: “Ten Times”


I remember reading about the 10x perspective a couple of weeks ago on Dan Sullivan’s blog here, and I was like, wow, what a new way to look at life? What a new way to operate from daily? A new way to approach my goals. I have since adopted that perspective and is working well for me. The blog is worth following and I am a big fan of Dan. Great Mentor. I’ve been thinking about multipliers for some time now, trying to find better and better ways to communicate this idea. The trick was how to transmit the idea so that others could instantly understand it and put it to use.

I could give countless examples of multipliers from history or from the remarkable things I’ve seen my clients do, yet people are ultimately most interested in their own story, their own future.

Then I got it: Ten times.

“What if this was 10x better?”

That question has an immediate effect on your mind. Say you ask it about your business. You might respond with excitement, or your brain might come back with a bunch of objections like:

•            But my clients wouldn’t pay that much!

•            But I don’t want to be ten times busier!

•            But I don’t have the support structures for that!

All these responses are extremely useful, because they highlight what stands between you and that 10x, which allows us to start asking further questions like:

•            Imagining your income is 10x greater, what kind of people are you dealing with?

•            You’re now 10x freer and 10x more focused on what you do best in your business. Which activities did you give up?

•            If you’re 10x more productive, what kind of team members do you have around you?

So “10x” is about much more than just money—it can mean whatever’s most important to you. Maybe you’d like to:

•            Reach 10x more people with your business and create value for them.

•            Make 10x the contribution in your community.

•            Have 10x more free time to spend with your family and on your other interests.

Why ten times? Why not five or even two?

The reason is that we’re pretty smart rats, and as smart rats, we say, “I bet I don’t have to change too much to get double the result.” You keep doing a lot of old stuff—just more of it—and it gets you into trouble. The knowledge, attitudes, skills, and habits that got you here aren’t the same ones you’ll be operating with at 10x.

Plus, small multipliers simply aren’t exciting enough. Ten times—now that’s a reason to wake up in the morning! It also gives you a standard for looking at your world: Once you get into that frame of mind, you find yourself asking, “Why am I still doing this? Does it contribute to 10x?”

Ten times is on the outer reaches of imagination, where your thinking goes “POP!”—from incremental change to a quantum leap. It’s an entirely new, unfettered perspective.  And it’s actually the safest way to think about the future, because it will introduce you to all the growth you need in order to deal with a rapidly changing world.

Speed of Implementation — How to Fail Faster to Succeed Sooner

This is a huge lesson I learned in the last few months as I’ve completed several projects faster and more efficiently than ever before. And all of what I’ve learned comes down to just one essential skill all business builders and passive income enthusiasts need to learn — mastering deadlines and the art of “Speed of Implementation.”

And all of what I’ve learned comes down to just one essential skill all business builders and passive income enthusiasts need to learn — mastering deadlines and the art of “Speed of Implementation.”

I’m a perfectionist at heart. It’s true. And while it can sometimes be one of my greatest assets, it’s long been a major deterrent to progress in business growth. Someone once said, “If you want to speed up the rate of success, speed up your rate of failure.” Nothing could be more spot-on than that. The secret to success really is failure. And the reason is simple: unless you fail (and I mean REALLY fail) you never get out there and learn those critical lessons you can ONLY learn on the field of battle.

Why Deadlines Work
Deadlines force failure because they make it absolutely necessary for you to fail. If you have a deadline in place and you keep it, you’re much more likely to actually achieve a goal and to take your idea or project from idea to fruition. In the realm of ideas, things work much differently than in reality. This is the whole point of entrepreneurship — moving from ideas to reality.

But let’s be honest — reality is a scary place. There are risks, uncertainties, problems, unexpected crises. Anything can happen at anytime and bad things *will* happen.

For me, learning how important it is to speed up implementation has helped me get better at welcoming failure as a means to move faster towards success. This concept “Speed of Implementation” just means moving towards goals faster by getting things done sooner. At the end of the day if it’s not you, it’s going to be your competitor.

Let’s dig into a real example….

Accountability is an Asset
At the beginning of this month, I launched my very first membership website. This was a goal I’d had for several years now and a big milestone. Now I realize how huge of an accomplishment it was to go from zero to full-speed on a project that was once just an idea floating in my mind. A mere possiblity transformed into a fruitful reality. Awesome!

But I owe much of my success to one important thing — deadlines. But why are deadlines so damn important? What do deadlines do for you? And what is it that makes them work so well?

To be fair, the real credit here doesn’t go to deadlines but to acccountability. Deadlines just make accountability possible. The trick is to put the two together for the greatest results. Lack of accountability prevents most people from ever reaching their goals. Without accountability, deadlines are pointles. Without someone or something to hold you accountable for what you say you’re going to do, you probably won’t do it.

So how can you get accountability? There are two essential ingredients for making this happen…

1. You need to commit to yourself.

2. You need other people to enforce your commitment.

Most people make the grave mistake of just working with #1. Sure, making promises to yourself is an important part of the process but you just can’t do it alone. Even if you are literally doing all of the work yourself, it’s critical to enlist the help of others to take on the huge psychological task of staying focused and moving towards a goal.

Say Hello to My Little Friend
If you’re an entrepreneur, you know how important your mind is to your success. You need your mind for new ideas, innovating thinking, creative problem solving, and everything that goes into the process of building and running a successful business.

But you also need your mind to stay focused in setting and achieving big goals. You have to know “the magic of thinking big.” And you have to have the mental power to press on when things seem too big and some goals seem like just far too much work for the risk.

This is a job you should not do alone.

That’s why the single best thing you could ever do for yourself is find other people with similar goals and ambitions to start taking on that job together. And that, dear readers, is the role of the Mastermind Group.

You’re probably saying one of 3 things to yourself right now…

1. What the $@!@# is a Mastermind Group?

2. Yeah, yeah. I’ve heard this routine before.

3. It’s true. It works for me too.

If you answered like #1 above, then go out and read Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” and report back to me when finished.

I’m fairly new to masterminds, but I’ve known about them for a looooong time. Frankly, if I’d started one earlier, I’d already be much farther along in my business.

The only way you’re going to make progress is by getting out of your comfort zone and welcoming mistakes. Two steps forward and one step back. If you spend too much your time thinking, analyzing, assessing and too little time taking action, you’re never going to move forward.

It can be difficult to figure this out on your own because all too often we fail to see our own shortcomings. Other people are much better at showing us the way and encouraging us to strike out in a positive direction. I know it sounds contradictory to open yourself up to failure when what you want is the exact opposite. But getting more comfortable with failure is the best way to make progress.

If you do anything after reading this, do this: Find 3 or 4 like-minded people and form a group. Get together at least 1x per week and take turns sharing your current business goals and your most pressing problems. I guarantee you that this one change can help you speed up your rate of implementation and increase your rate of success!

How to Eliminate Excuses and Fear in 2012


A great post for 2012 by Tess Marshall. Check her blog at Theboldlife.com, there is so much value there.

I made too many excuses this year. I wanted to create more videos. I did not. I wanted to be more active on social media. It’s been an on again, off again endeavor.

I wanted to learn photo shop. I did not. Only one thing has stood in my way.

Fear.

I lacked courage and I failed to take action.

The wonderful thing about life is that we can always shift our perception and choose to begin again.

That’s my plan.

The word I’ve chosen to focus on in 2012 is “create.”

I’m going to create everything I’ve been holding back on and more. I made up my mind and I’ve written my plan.

I’ve taken common excuses and created a plan for you as well. It doesn’t matter what you want to do or what you’re struggling with.

Adjust this plan to fit your needs.

It’s going to be a great year!

Read on if you want to create more and fear less. 

Excuse # 1: I don’t know how. 

Plan:  Create courage 

Do something brand new. Be open to being a beginner. Experience the different and the difficult. Push yourself. Follow someone’s lead.

Ask questions. Experiment. Try. Fail. Try again. Fail again. Succeed. 

Excuse # 2: I don’t have time. 

Plan: Create time 

To find more time become an early riser or stay up later. Create boundaries. Don’t take on projects that don’t fit your needs.

Create a “yes” so big that you’ll be able to say “no.” You will have time and energy to make room for the impossible!

Excuse # 3: I don’t have the funds. 

Plan: Create money

Get your finances in order. It’s the best thing you can do for your fearful self. Record your daily expenses.

Spend less. Earn more. Barter. Collect garbage or clean floors if you have too. Be willing to do what it takes.

Excuse # 4 I don’t like networking.

Plan: Create an offline social network 

Get out and be social face-to-face. Go to a grocery store, a coffee house, or a networking meeting and introduce yourself to five people a week.

Expand your circle. Establish new friendships. The more people you know the faster you and your business will grow.

Excuse # 5: Nothing ever goes right for me.

Plan: Create abundance

I have kept a gratitude journal for the past eight years.

When you record the beauty, pleasures, people, and experiences that enrich your life you become aware of your resources, increase your creativity, and increase your well-being.

Excuse # 6: It’s too difficult. 

Plan: Create success

Decide to succeed no matter what. Don’t allow anything to get in your way. Act as if your life and happiness depend on it. It does. Never give up, never.

Excuse # 7 I can’t handle rejection. 

Plan: Create support

Ask for help. Begin a mastermind group. Expect to be turned down and ignored. People will reject you. Never take it personally.

You can’t see the whole picture. You have no idea what is going on in somebody else’s life. There are nearly 7 billion people in the world, ask someone else. Find your tribe.

Excuse # 8: I can’t focus. 

Plan: Create focus

Become driven by what you will gain. Is your benefit financial freedom, travel, saving the lives of others, or leaving a legacy you can be proud of?

When the going gets tough, keep you focus on your “why.” You’re stronger than  you think.

Excuse # 9 I don’t feel worthy. 

Plan: Create faith 

Dump your doubt. When you doubt yourself you feel like you aren’t good enough, smart enough, or talented enough for your place in the world. Don’t get caught in your own drama.

Affirm: “I am enough, I have enough, I do enough. I am worthy of the best in life.” Repeat this each time your doubt surfaces.

Get into the “feeling” of worthiness. Believe your are worthy, speak like your worthy, and act like  you’re worthy.

Excuse # 10 

Plan: Create the extraordinary 

Don’t try to be perfect. Don’t copy what others do.  Instead put your energy into being exceptional, uncommon, and memorable.

When you want to convey your ideas, focus on your message. Tell stories that people will remember you for and speak from your heart.

Nobody is going to rescue you. Nobody is coming to save you. Give live all you’ve got…and more.

The 30 Steps to Mastery


I love this post from Ben Casnocha’s Blog that I read regularly.  It sums up what must be done in going after your goals.

The commenter Onjibonrenat, on my post How to Draw an Owl, adds a few more steps to the process of achieving mastery:

Top 10 Soft Skills to Master in 2012


Here is a great blog post I got from one of my favorite blogs Todd Smith of  little things matter. Check it out I think it is great advice  heading into the new year. This blog post was originally written for 2011 and because I think it is valuable,   I am applying it to 2012 as well. Have fun all.

Soft skills is a term relating to a cluster of personal attributes that characterize relationships with other people, such as social graces, communication, cooperation, honesty, respect, responsibility, friendliness, and optimism.

Because companies are becoming more process and system driven and because job competition has increased at all levels, there has never been a time when soft skills offer more value to the market than they do today.

As a growing number of people with similar talents and education compete for the same jobs, promotions, and clients, soft skills become the differentiating factor separating one person from another. The little things you’ve been learning about in this blog now matter more than ever.

In writing this post I made a list of my top 50 soft skills; I then slowly and painful reduced that list to my top 10. As you read each skill, I challenge you to look in the mirror of truth and do an honest evaluation.

If you have the desire to improve a specific skill, click the title link and learn more about that skill and the benefits of mastering it. Make 2012 the year you take your people skills to a new level.

1.  The Art of Listening. If your family, friends, and colleagues were asked to rank your listening skills, what would they say? Do you interrupt? Do you try to control the conversation? Do you ask questions showing a genuine interest in what people are saying?

Being an attentive listener is one of the most important skills you can master, especially in this fast-paced world where everyone wants to talk and few have the patience to listen. Be intentional this next year to listen more and talk less.

2.  Cell Phone Etiquette. A friend told me about his colleague, a Realtor, who landed a $6,900,000 listing. As he was leaving the seller’s home, he causally asked why he had been selected over the other four Realtors. The seller said, “You were the only one who did not check your cell phone during the appointment.” The Realtor ended up selling the home, earning over $300K.

Cell phone addiction is out of control. This next year, challenge yourself to show respect when using your phone, both at work and at home.

3.  Show More Respect. People’s tolerance for being disrespected is as low as I have ever seen it. The days of advancing careers by stepping on the toes of co-workers are over. People deserve to be treated with respect and are now demanding it.

Look for the little things you can do in 2012 to show more respect to others. This includes the teller at the bank. Treat people as human beings and not as pawns on your chess board. As you treat others with greater respect, they will admire you and so will the people who witness your actions.

4.  Authenticity. Because many people are less trusting than they have ever been and others are tired of being around people who are not genuine and real, there is a powerful trend towards authenticity.

Being authentic is when you are not trying to impress others nor are you acting like someone you are not. The authenticity I am referring to makes people comfortable, relaxed, and enjoy your presence.

5.  Show Interest in Others. How frequently do people show a genuine interest in you, your ideas, or interests? When was the last time a friend called you (without an agenda) just to see how you are doing? If your life is like mine, it doesn’t happen frequently.

In 2012 slow down and show an interest in those whose relationship you value. As you do, you will stand out from all the superficial relationships as someone who cares about others.

6.  Verbal Communication. According to a new research report by Kelly Services the traits individuals identify as the most important in creating their personal brands were their verbal communication skills. This includes such things as being friendly, clear, concise, confident, humble, and positive in the way you speak with others.

How you communicate with others verbally plays a defining role in how you are viewed. Think before you speak in 2012 and take pride in the way you interact with others.

7.  Become More Responsible. As the speed of life has accelerated, so has the number of people are who are neglecting to do the things that are expected of them, including being late for appointments, failing to return calls and emails, and not completing projects on time.

Being responsible also includes admitting when you have made a mistake and accepting responsibility for your actions and decisions. Let 2012 be the year that you stop making excuses and start doing the little things that are expected of you.

8.  Make Your Appearance an Asset. Very few things are more powerful in creating your brand than the visual imprint you make in people’s minds. When you take pride in your appearance, it makes you look good, it helps you feel good, and it increases your influence with others.

I have learned that, when it comes to appearance, it’s all about the little things. From the way your hair is combed, to the style of clothes you wear and the shine on your shoes—it all makes an impression on others. Step up your appearance in 2012.

9.  Control Your Emotional Energy. Most of what I hear going on today is negative. It’s like the recession has given everyone a free pass to find fault with everything. Whining and complaining have become a part of most conversations.

Leaders and employers know they can’t build a business when their people are focused on negative issues. It only takes one negative person to impact the atmosphere of an entire office; therefore, they are hiring and rewarding people who have a positive influence in their work environment.

Remember, where your attention goes, so goes your energy and attitude. Make 2012 the year you start focusing on positives and avoid the complainers who are dragging you down.

10.  Your Email Brand. Every email you send makes a small, but noticeable impression on others. The accumulation of these impressions forms your brand. Think about your goals and consider the person you need to become to achieve your goals. I encourage you to read theEmail Tips Report and focus on improving your email brand in 2012.

George Gurney, a leader in the employment industry since 1976, said, “When it comes to job offers, the soft skills determine who gets the job. After many years of recruiting, I know for a fact that when all the candidates’ work experience, education, and hard skills are equal, the candidate with the best soft skills will win! . . . Soft skills can be best defined as the quality of a person’s charisma. ”

Let me challenge you to take inventory of your own soft skills. Make note of those you need to develop into strong and winning assets and make a New Year’s resolution to work on those in 2012.

Improving your soft skills will have a positive impact on every part of your life.

Having been on my third startup, I’ve learned a few things about the “starting up” process. And one thing I’ve realized is that a great product isn’t the secret to success, it’s the team around you that makes it or breaks it.

The first “five” people you hire are critical. Think of these as your navy seals that’ll go into battle with you. They need to have the same drive, ambition, and their interests have to be aligned with you. They have to be in it for the right reasons. If you pick the right “five” – you’ll either succeed with the original idea or pivot to an even greater one.

Once you’ve proven to the marketplace you’ve got a reason to be in market – the next question is how big can you make this? It’s the growth stage. If you get this right – you’ll solve two things. The first thing: The foundation of your company culture. This becomes the DNA – the energy that celebrates all the ups and problem/solves the downs.

Second, it’s about the opportunity. How big can I make this? And you’ll only know the answers to that, when you’ve got the best minds working on the problem. Superman was fiction. But, delegation amongst the right team can bring the superpowers of success at your fingertips. Pick the right first 20 and they’ll take you as far as you can lead them.

In the technology world, people get confused – they feel a business is run by a magical algorithm. Relationships are everything in the life and most importantly in the business world. A successful business is not run by algorithms but by relationships.

I remember reading an article about Marissa Mayer, employee #20 at Google. On her second day at the Company, it had signed a deal to become Netscape’s default search engine. Employees were frantically doing calculations to determine whether they would have enough power to handle the searches that came in. They had about 300 computers at the time and weren’t sure they’d have the capacity. Google told Netscape to send only one of every five queries, but Netscape didn’t listen: It sent Google all its traffic, and Google had to take down its site.

Some can argue that it was the Company’s fault for not being ready. I disagree. No algorithm or product is ever perfect or ever will be. It’s an ongoing iteration. A team’s ability to understand, react, and solve each opportunity defines a Company’s future success. 10 years later from that event, they are still the most valuable Internet Company in the world.

And, that’s enough motivation and a case study for every entrepreneur on building his or her dream team.

Here’s how!!

The more excuses you come up with to avoid doing it, the more important it is to get it done. After all, if it didn’t really matter, you wouldn’t bother with all the excuses.

Whatever you feel yourself resisting, is what you must find a way to do. Because when you can get past the resistance, what you’ll be able to create is great and fulfilling value.

It is much, much easier to give in to the excuses. But then all you’ll be left with is regret.

It is much more difficult to do those great and wonderful things you know you’re capable of doing. Yet from that difficulty comes
the golden experience of the life you know you are meant to live.

Go ahead and feel the fear, feel the doubt, feel the frustration and discomfort and apprehension. Then, take all that energy and lovingly, joyfully, enthusiastically turn it around.

Step confidently forward in precisely the direction that is most challenging to you. Because in that same direction, you’ll also find what is most rewarding to you.

Choose to forego what is easy right now. And deliver yourself into the realm of what is truly great and fulfilling.

Knocked off your Tush (4 of 4)


Finishing up our series on what you do when you take one to the kisser, knocking you on your rump… (read part 1, 2, 3)

Here is Point No. 3: Turn obstacles into opportunities. Ask any great achiever who has achieved despite great obstacles, if they could go back and avoid the obstacle, would they, and the answer invariably is “no.” Even our friend Roger (born handicapped with only three fingers, one foot and three toes), if given the opportunity to have perfectly formed arms, legs, hands and feet, would chose to be born the same way he was.

This is true for Lance Armstrong and his battle with cancer. It wasn’t until after he fought and beat cancer that he developed the strength to beat everyone in the world, seven times, in one of the most grueling and punishing sport contests there is—The Tour de France.

Ask the woman heralded as the “fastest women on earth” in the 1960 Olympics, Wilma Rudolph, if she would go back and wish not to have suffered measles, scarlet fever, whooping cough and be born with polio, twisting her left leg so bad that it required a brace. It was BECAUSE of those obstacles that she had to dig up her deeper and greater potential and drive. It required her to work harder, longer and with more determination than any would-be competitor. That character, forged through difficulty, is what created the extraordinary achievements and opportunities she realized. As Albert Mensah said so eloquently to me in a recent interview, “Opportunities are cloaked in obstacles.”

In fact, to take this one step further, I have learned to see obstacles, failure and pain as positive and necessary for growth. I learned this early on from my dad, whose mantra in life was painted in big black block letters on our garage wall, “No Pain, No Gain.”

One of my earliest recollections on this lesson was on the ski slopes. My dad taught me to snow ski when I was 6 years old. By the time I was 8, I was skiing on my own. One time, at the end of a full ski day, I eagerly and proudly announced to my dad, “Dad, I didn’t fall once all day!” My dad replied, “If you didn’t fall, you didn’t get any better.” What? This was the opposite response I was expecting and hoping for. The bewildered look on my face compelled my dad to elaborate, “If you are going to get better, you have to push yourself. If you push yourself, you are going to fall. Falling is part of getting better.”

I owe much of the success I have been able to achieve to my dad and this philosophy. My dad taught me it was not only OK to fail, but it was proof you were improving. I never saw setbacks, obstacles, rejection or even pain as things to avoid; rather, they were improvement markers on the journey toward greatness and should be appreciated, even celebrated. I challenge you to adopt such a philosophy.

Here is point No. 4: It’s not whether you get knocked down (everyone will get knocked down), it’s how fast you get up. We all experience failure, setbacks, disappointments and obstacles. And yes it hurts, and that is okay. We are human. Rejection, failure and letdowns hurt humans. It’s part of the deal.

Now the difference is how long you let it keep you down. Confucius has this to say, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do.” Here is the evolution I have gone through and recommend for you. What used to bum me out for 2 weeks I eventually whittled down to 2 days. Then I got it down to 2 hours and then 20 minutes. Now when I am knocked down, I give myself about 2 minutes (up to 20 if it’s a doozy) to sulk and then I brush myself off and get ‘back on the horse.’ I also look to replace the experience with something positive. I never allow myself to end the session or day with a defeat. I will keep working until I can gain some kind of victory.

Keep the prize in mind. When faced with a temporary setback, take your eyes off the setback and affix them on the reward, the end zone—the pot of gold at the end of the tumultuous rainbow trail.

So it’s okay to get knocked down; its even good for you—it’s the beginning of growth. And it’s okay that it smarts a bit. And it’s okay to give yourself some recovery time. Now just try and reduce the time it knocks you out.

And get over the idea that life sucks only for you. Everyone goes through both sides of the pendulum swing. We all go through our winters in life. Maybe the best motto you can adopt in overcoming obstacles or temporary setbacks is this, “This too shall pass.” And it will. How fast and how grand life is for you when springtime comes around is entirely up to you and the choice you make when faced with obstacles. To overcome or not to overcome—that’s up to you.
